Camps Bay's first residents were the San and Khoi tribes. The Dutch East India Company took over their grazing lands on the South-Eastern slopes of Table Mountain in 1657 and were subsequently confined to Camps Bay. By 1713, the Gringqhaique population had significantly decreased due to outbreaks of measles and smallpox.

The land was later granted to John Lodewyk Wernich and passed down through the family. Johan Wernich married Anna Koekemoer, who married Fredrick Ernst von Kamptz, a sailor after he died in 1778, and the place became known as "Die Baai van von Kamptz." Originally called "Die Baai van Von Kampz '' or "the Bay of Von Kampz," the name eventually changed to Camps Bay.
